De problemen werden vastgesteld bij de producten Choice Complete Care van Menu Foods inc, bij de varianten 'Adult, Rich in Chicken and Liver', 'Adult, Rich in Turkey with Broth', 'Kitten, Rich in Chicken and Liver', 'Light, Rich in Chicken and Liver', 'Senior, Rich in Chicken and Turkey', 'Kitten, with Ocean Fish and Tuna' en 'Kitten, Rich in Salmon with Ocean Fish'.

Europa voerde in totaal 3.340 kisten in.

(belga/hln) 24 maart 2007

Rat Poison Found in Killer Pet Food That Sparked Nationwide Recall
Friday, March 23, 2007

ALBANY, N.Y.  —  Rat poison was found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, but scientists said Friday they still don't know how it got there and predicted more animal deaths would be linked to it.

Also Friday, the company that produced the food expanded its recall to include all 95 brands of the "cuts and gravy" style food, regardless of when they were produced.

The substance in the food was identified as aminopterin, a cancer drug that once was used to induce abortions in the United States and is still used to kill rats in some other countries, state Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker said.

The federal government prohibits using aminopterin for killing rodents in the U.S. State officials would not speculate on how the poison got into the pet food, but said no criminal investigations had been launched.

The pet deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of dog and cat food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. Some pets that ate the recalled brands suffered kidney failure, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.

The company expanded the recall — which initially covered only cans and pouches of food packaged from Dec. 3 through March 6 — after the FDA alerted it that some products remained on store shelves.

There is no risk to pet owners from handling the food, officials said.

The Food and Drug Administration has said the investigation into the pet deaths was focused on wheat gluten in the food. The gluten itself would not cause kidney failure, but it could have been contaminated, the FDA said.

Bob Rosenberg, senior vice president of government affairs for the National Pest Management Association, said it would be unusual for the wheat to be tainted.

"It would make no sense to spray a crop itself with rodenticide," Rosenberg said, adding that grain shippers typically put bait stations around the perimeter of their storage facilities.

Scientists at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University and at the New York State Food Laboratory tested three cat food samples provided by the manufacturer and found aminopterin in two of them. The two labs are part of a network created after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to keep the nation's animals and food supply safe.

"Any amount of this product is too much in food," Hooker said.

Aminopterin is highly toxic in high doses. It inhibits the growth of malignant cells and suppresses the immune system. In dogs and cats, the amount of aminopterin found — 40 parts per million — can cause kidney failure, according to Bruce Akey, director of Cornell's diagnostic center.

"It's there in substantial amounts," Akey said.

Donald Smith, dean of Cornell's veterinary school, said he expected the number of pet deaths to increase. "Based on what we've heard the last couple days, 16 is a low number," Smith said.

Aminopterin is no longer marketed as a cancer drug, but is still used in research, said Andre Rosowsky, a chemist with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Rosowsky speculated that the substance would not show up in pet food "unless somebody put it there."

Paul Henderson, chief executive of Ontario, Canada-based Menu Foods, said the company does not believe the food was tampered with because the recalled food came from two different plants, one in Kansas, one in New Jersey. Menu continues to produce food at the two plants.

The company, already facing lawsuits, said Friday it is testing all the ingredients that go into the food.

"We have a lot of work to do, and we are eager to get back to it," Henderson said. "This is a highly unusual substance."

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was posted online by Menu Foods and is available at http://www.menufoods.com/recall/index.html. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.

Investigators also have not yet determined whether aminopterin is the only contaminant in all the recalled food.

"If it is not the only culprit, as I suspect, the problem isn't over," McGill said, adding that it is also uncertain as to whether the finding will be much help to veterinarians.

NUTRO TO VOLUNTARILY WITHDRAW CERTAIN
"WET" CAT & DOG FOODS
IN RESPONSE TO MENU FOODS RECALL

No dry Nutro pet foods, biscuits or treats are impacted

We have just been made aware that Menu Foods has expanded the date range of their recall. NO New Products are being added and we ask all Nutro customers that have any wet "cuts & gravy style" pet foods product, regardless of the "best by date," to no longer feed these products to their pets and to return them for a full refund. This action is being taken to avoid customers' confusion in reading specific "best by dates" on individual cans and pouches.

Complete List of Recalled Products

City of Industry, Calif. (March 23, 2007) – As a result of the Menu Foods North American recall of specific canned and small foil pouch ‘wet' cat and dog food, Nutro Products, along with many other pet food companies, has announced a voluntary recall on specific pet food products manufactured for it by Menu Foods. This recall applies to certain wet food only. No dry Nutro pet foods, biscuits or treats are impacted by this matter and no other canned or pouched Nutro products are subject to this recall.

Menu Foods and the FDA have indicated there have been a small number of reported pet illnesses and deaths associated with kidney failure from ingestion of products tied to Menu Foods.  Signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting and lethargy.  Consumers should immediately stop using the involved products and consult with a veterinarian if their pet shows any signs of these symptoms.

Nutro Products has engaged in this pro-active action out of an over abundance of caution for the health and well-being of our customers' pets.

The only Nutro products involved in this recall are:
Cat Pouch Products
Dog Pouch Products
Certain Dog 12.5 oz Canned Products

Consumers should immediately discontinue feeding these products to their pets.

For a detailed list of specific products please go to "Menu Foods Recall Information."

Menu Foods is a contract manufacturer that makes a portion of canned and small pouch foods for Nutro Products and many other pet food manufacturers in North America. Similar such voluntary recalls are being conducted by other involved pet food manufacturers in the United States and Canada.

This voluntary product recall involves the immediate discontinuation of all sales of the involved products, removal of these products from retail stores and the isolation of product in warehouses and distribution centers.

We want to assure you that none of Nutro's dry foods, biscuits or treats were affected by this recall and none are manufactured by Menu Foods.

We also feel it is worth noting that many Nutro employees feed our dry and wet foods to their own pets. We understand our customers' concerns and we regret the unfortunate situation caused by Menu Foods' recall. The health and well being of our customers' pets has always been our top priority.

Nutro's products are 100% guaranteed and all returned product will be refunded. Nutro regrets any inconvenience caused by Menu Foods' recall.

Nutro customers may check Nutro's website (www.nutroproducts.com) or contact Nutro's Consumer Hotline (800) 833-5330 for further information about its products. Someone close to the investigation tells ABC News that rodenticide, a chemical which the source says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food. In the last week, there have been at least 15 confirmed deaths of pets tied to contaminated food. (ABC News)
